MANGALURU, OCTOBER 14: Serious allegations of sexual abuse involving more than 50 minor boys have surfaced against Fr. Cyprian Pinto of St. Vincent Church in Valencia, Mangaluru. Mysuru-based Odanadi Seva Samsthe has lodged a complaint with the Mangaluru Police Commissioner, demanding registration of a case under the POCSO Act and a thorough investigation.
According to the complaint, Fr. Cyprian Pinto allegedly sexually exploited minor boys who assisted with religious services at the Valencia church. Odanadi director Stanley stated that some of the alleged victims had also reportedly complained to Mangaluru Bishop Peter Paul Saldanha.
The complaint alleges that parents submitted a written representation to the Bishop approximately two months ago. According to Stanley, the parents were reportedly told that the matter would be brought to the attention of the Pope at the Vatican and appropriate action would be taken. However, Odanadi has questioned the alleged delay in bringing the matter to the police.
Stanley has demanded that the police investigate the allegations against the priest and examine whether the Bishop or any other individuals failed to fulfil their legal obligations after becoming aware of the alleged offences. He has also called for action against those responsible for any failure to report the matter as required by law.
The complaint further refers to representations allegedly made to child protection authorities and a direction for an inquiry by the District Child Protection Unit in Mangaluru. Stanley has questioned why effective legal action had reportedly not been initiated despite the complaints and the passage of time.
Speaking to Headline Karnataka, Stanley said he had submitted a complaint to the Police Commissioner and had also spoken over the phone, but claimed he had not found confirmation that an FIR had been registered.
Citing Sections 19 and 21 of the POCSO Act, 2012, Stanley stressed the legal obligation to report suspected sexual offences against children and called for an impartial investigation. He urged the people of Mangaluru to raise their voices in support of child protection and accountability.
