Severe tornado leaves trail of destruction in Alabama

Tornadoes and severe thunderstorms ripped through much of the Southeast US on Thursday, causing destruction in parts of Alabama.

The giant, swirling storm system billowing across the South spawned a tornado that shredded the walls of homes, toppled roofs and uprooted trees in Selma.
Officials estimate that 40 to 50 homes were damaged or destroyed by storms that cut a strip across the county.
With trees and power lines down, authorities are urging residents to avoid affected areas.
Multiple torando warnings were issued throughout the South and heavy thunderstorms stretched from eastern Texas to Georgia and as far north as Indiana, Fox News said in a report.
Several trees have been downed due to high winds in Prentiss County, Mississippi.
Around 40 million people from southern Texas to Georgia and central Indiana and Illinois are at the risk of severe weather. There are reports of structural damage across several locations in Mississippi.
Ernie Baggett, the emergency management director in Autauga County, Alabama, told The Associated Press mobile homes and conventional homes were both damaged.
